It was produced by Sasikumar under the banner of Gokulam Movies.
The movie was released on 6 September 2009 in 500 screens across Kerala. It was a major commercial success at the box office. Sify wrote: "Vineeth Sreenivasan's "Fanaa" is a good romantic entertainer. Vineeth has caught up with the current trend of inter-caste love stories and this makes "Fanaa" a winner. The director has a flair for making light hearted movies and he does it again with Fanaa which is an out and out commercial film". Indiaglitz wrote:"'Fanaa' directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan, tells a normal love story set against normal background, but has some extraordinary moments in its screenplay to carry you away from the humdrum of every day life". The soundtrack for "Fanaa" was composed by Gopi Sundar and lyrics were written by Vayalar Sarath. The song "Jeene Ka Teena" from "Fanaa" was critically received. It won the Best Song Award at the 2010 Kerala State Film Awards.
Aishwarya Lekshmi won the National Film Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role as a college student in this film, directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan.
